Local Immigrant Population*

20000

*Immigrant Population is an estimated sum of the number of naturalized Americans from this country and citizens from this country living in the Seattle Metro Area under any sort of immigration visa.  It does not count the American offspring or descendants of immigrants from this country, which can go back many generations and account for large numbers of people.  1,000 is the default number when we don’t have a better count.

Languages:

Amharic is the official common language in Ethiopia but Oromo is the single most spoken mother tongue.

Notes:

Imagine the culture shock disembarking a flight in Seattle from Addis Abbaba for the first time!  Because Ethiopia is Africa’s second most populous country, only a tiny percent call Seattle home.  However, that is enough to give the region a vibrant East African community.  With a culture dating back thousands of years, Ethiopians have learned something about community. If you live in Seattle and have never met an Ethiopian, then you need to get out more:-)  On a serious note, every Seattleite would surely benefit from having an Ethiopian friend.  In 2021, Ethiopia announced a significant reduction of diplomatic staff in America, including the closure of a consulate general in Los Angeles.
