Local Immigrant Population*
*Immigrant Population is an estimated sum of the number of naturalized Americans from this country and citizens from this country living in the Seattle Metro Area under any sort of immigration visa. It does not count the American offspring or descendants of immigrants from this country, which can go back many generations and account for large numbers of people. 1,000 is the default number when we don’t have a better count.
Finnish and Swedish immigration are closely linked because most of Finland was part of Sweden prior to 1917. Finns have been coming to settle in the PNW for over 100 years, and the impact of those thousands of new Americans can still be seen and experienced today. Generations of homegrown Finns and more recently arrived Finns form a fabulous Finnish diaspora right here in Seattle with active social and cultural groups and places of worship where local Finns gather to celebrate their heritage and customs. Finnair, the national carrier, flies people non-stop once a week between Seattle and Helsinki.
