Local Immigrant Population*
*Immigrant Population is an estimated sum of the number of naturalized Americans from this country and citizens from this country living in the Seattle Metro Area under any sort of immigration visa. It does not count the American offspring or descendants of immigrants from this country, which can go back many generations and account for large numbers of people. 1,000 is the default number when we don’t have a better count.
Civil war in El Salvador drove refugees to America in the 1980’s and the migration has continued. Apart from some wealthy Salvadorans who settled in various neighborhoods across the US, this population arrived here with only their shirts on their backs and an opportunity to rebuild their lives in a new country.
Salvadorans do not have a particularly prominent presence in the greater Seattle region, but many Seattleites have stepped up to advocate for El Salvador and its people. Consular services in America for Salvadorans is practically non-existent. At the time of this update, the country’s embassy website in Washington DC is unreachable. Seattle has at least a couple Salvadoran restaurants and food trucks if you are really jonesing for Pupusa or Yuca Frita con Chicaron.
